FAQ
What is an Escape Room?
An Escape Room is an immersive, interactive live-action game set in a specially themed environment. Groups of 2 to 8 people (family, friends or business colleagues) must work together to unlock objects, solve puzzles, and decipher codes to complete a specific Mission or Quest in order to escape before time runs out!
Can you tell me more about Ultimate Xscape Rooms?
Absolutely! Ultimate Xscape Rooms is an independent locally owned & operated entertainment venue. We offer immersive custom-built escape room and mystery whodunit games where YOU take the lead in your own adventure!
What sets us apart from the regional and national escape room chains? First, we custom design and build our own escape rooms so our games are unique and one-of-a-kind! Second, our amazing team of Game Hosts places the highest priority on delivering a memorable, personalized game experience for each Guest – whether you’re a seasoned game enthusiast or a first-timer!
We are incredibly honored that our independent venue received the coveted Tripadvisor 2023 TRAVELERS’ CHOICE Award. We could not have achieved this distinction without our incredible Guests – we truly appreciate you choosing us for your immersive game adventures and sharing your comments & feedback!
So a little more about us…we’re a husband-and-wife team. We live here in Somerset County, NJ and have strong ties to the community. It’s probably no surprise that we’re serious nerds 🤓 and big fans of (you guessed it!) escape rooms as well as whodunit mysteries, board games and puzzles of all kinds. (We’re seriously addicted to Wordle and *may* have a problem.) We’re also lifelong fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genres – books, films, TV series – you name it!
When conceptualizing and building out our rooms, we love to put our combined backgrounds to use: electrical engineering and immersive entertainment (Disney Parks & Resorts). We’re passionate about creating unique, engaging storylines and themed environments for our Guests to experience in person.
Are your rooms private?
All our rooms are private experiences. Your group (only you and the people you come with) will have the room exclusively to yourselves for the duration of your game. Because our rooms are private, when you book the game online, it will close out and show as “full” but you can add more people at the door when you arrive (up to the room maximum). If you have more than 8 people in your group, please email or call us in advance of when you’d like to come so we can best accommodate you.
How can I book an escape game or mystery game?
It’s easy to book your escape room or mystery room experience! Simply click on the BOOK NOW button to view availability of our weekend games (Friday 4pm through Sunday) and book your private room experience using our secure encrypted online reservation system. We accept PayPal and all major credit cards: Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover. (We are a cashless venue.) Booking in advance is highly recommended to guarantee your first choice of room theme, date and time slot. Walk-in groups are accommodated based solely on availability.
Please reach out to our team at 908-685-0382 if you need assistance with the booking process or have specific questions not found on our FAQ page.
What is the minimum age to play?
ESCAPE ROOMS (Dragon Castle & Edison’s Secret Laboratory): minimum age is 10.
MYSTERY WHODUNIT ROOM (The Mysterious Case of Dr. Mortis): minimum age is 6.
ALL ROOMS: An adult (18+) must participate with anyone who is under 15 years old.
For safety and liability reasons, younger children (including infants and toddlers) are not permitted inside the rooms.
Do I need a reservation?
We highly recommend booking online in advance via our secure encrypted reservation system. Booking ahead guarantees your private game experience and locks in your preferred game, date and time slot. We are happy to accommodate walk-ins based on availability, but cannot guarantee that any of our rooms will be available if you arrive without a reservation.
Corporate team building events are custom bookings and can be scheduled by reaching out to our Events Manager at info@ultimatexscaperooms.com.
How can I add more people to my booked game?
- Because all our rooms are private, when you book the room online it will close out and show as “full” but you can add more people at the door when you arrive (up to the game maximum).
- Groups of 9-16 people can reserve two escape rooms (generally, 8 people per game) that are offered 30 minutes apart in start time as shown on our online reservation calendar. We have a set schedule on weekends (Friday 4pm through Sunday evening) and are unable to accommodate custom start times. If you’d like to guarantee starting at exactly the same time, we recommend booking the first two game time slots of the day: on FRIDAY, the 5:00pm Edison’s Laboratory and the 5:30pm Dragon Castle games; on SATURDAY or SUNDAY, the 11:00am Edison’s Laboratory and the 11:30am Dragon Castle games.
- Groups of 17+ people, please email or call us in advance to discuss additional scheduling options so we can best accommodate your group.
How do I reschedule a booked game or event?
Regular Weekend Games (Friday through Sunday)
Games may be rescheduled to a different day or time (or switched to a different room) 24 hours or more prior to your booked game start time. Please note that no credit will be issued for any booked guests who arrive late or are no-shows.
Corporate Team Building Events (weekdays)
As we dedicate our staff and make our venue available exclusively for your group, team building events can only be rescheduled with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice. Please note that no credit will be issued for any booked guests who arrive late or are no-shows.
How much does it cost?
ESCAPE ROOMS – Dragon Castle & Edison’s Secret Laboratory: $35 per person. All our rooms are private experiences.
MYSTERY WHODUNIT ROOM – The Mysterious Case of Dr. Mortis: $15 per person. All our rooms are private experiences.
CORPORATE TEAM BUILDING EVENTS: Please reach out to our Events Manager at info@ultimatexscaperooms.com for more information or to schedule your event.
Will we actually be *locked* inside a room?!
Nope. You won’t need to find a key or get a code to unlock the door. Instead, your team will be challenged to complete a specific mission or quest in order to “escape” the room. You can exit the room if necessary, but hopefully you’ll be so focused on the game that the very notion of leaving prematurely won’t even cross your mind!
Can I take photos or video inside the room?
Nope, sorry! Photos and videos (including live-streaming) are strictly prohibited inside our rooms. After your private experience, your Game Host will take complimentary team photos of your group at the dedicated Photo Wall in our reception area. We have a variety of themed signs and props you can use to enhance your photo keepsake.
What time do we need to arrive?
Your game experience will begin at the scheduled time. We ask that your group arrives 15 minutes prior to your booked game start time to check in and receive an orientation. There is a 15-minute grace period after which your game’s mission/quest clock will start. If you arrive late, the amount of time you will have to play in the room may be reduced as we need to stay on schedule to reset the game for the next guests arriving to play.
No refunds or credit will be issued for late arrivals, missed games or any member of your party who is a no-show. We strongly recommend allowing ample time for traffic and parking – especially on weekends. Please visit the DIRECTIONS/PARKING/CONTACT US page of this website for details on the closest parking to our venue.
How can I schedule a corporate team building event?
We host immersive, engaging team building events for corporations, local businesses and non-profit groups by advance reservation. If you are interested in scheduling a team building event or would like more information, please reach out to our Events Manager at info@ultimatexscaperooms.com.
Our custom-built escape rooms offer a unique challenge for your team and encourage cooperation, communication and collaboration among colleagues, helping to establish or solidify work relationships. Please enjoy any adult beverages AFTER your game! Our Escape and Mystery games require you to engage your cognitive skills and to remain alert and focused. To maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all our guests, anyone arriving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be denied admission (at the sole discretion of the management). All guests must follow the rules for their own safety as well as the safety of our other guests and our staff. Guests who fail to follow the rules and/or behave in an inappropriate or irresponsible manner (including rowdy, destructive or unsafe behavior) will be removed from the room and no refunds or credits will be issued.
Will you donate to our fundraising event?
We prioritize supporting non-profit organizations serving the local area: Somerville, Raritan, Hillsborough and Bridgewater. When possible, we also consider donation requests from non-profits operating within the greater Somerset and Hunterdon County area. Donations for fundraising events (Tricky Trays, auctions, etc.) will be in the form of a UXR Gift Certificate. (As an independent, family-owned small business, we have limited resources and therefore are unable to fulfill requests to purchase ad space or event sponsorships.) If your non-profit organization is interested in holding a fundraising event at our venue, please contact us via email or phone.
Guidelines for Donation Requests ~ All email or snail mail requests for UXR Gift Certificate donations must include the following information: the soliciting organization’s official name and full mailing address, Tax ID#, type of fundraising event (date and description), and contact person’s name and email address. Please understand that we are a local small business – we simply do not have the extra staff or time to fill out donor forms as we receive an overwhelming number of donation requests for Spring and Fall fundraising events each year.
Do you offer hints if we get stuck?
Yes, absolutely! Your Game Host can provide your team with up to three Hints during your escape game. All you need to do is ask! (Our team has been known to give a bonus hint if you’re celebrating a special occasion!)
